Lebanese Youth Call for Transformative Leadership Amidst Distrust in Current Political Landscape
Lebanese youth hold a distrustful view of their nation’s leaders. Unfortunately, political maneuvering in Lebanon prevents good leaders from emerging; they are not given the opportunity to rise. A glance into Lebanon’s history reveals that leaders once perceived as having integrity and the courage to openly stand up for their country were often silenced, assassinated, or forced out of their role.In present day Lebanon, state leadership is often associated with leaders who tend to prioritize personal agendas over the public welfare. Discussions with Lebanese youth living in Lebanon or abroad, almost unanimously agree that most current leaders of Lebanon, with very few exceptions, are not fit for their role. Not only do they prioritize personal agendas, but also apply political fragmentation and lack vision, integrity, and accountability. In the context of absent leadership at the state level, some Lebanese youth attribute successful leadership to Lebanese individuals who remain resilient and active in Lebanon- in a way, they are filling the void.
“Everyone that’s been holding on and not giving up in Lebanon is a good leader, and they are the one taking care of Lebanon even with everything that’s happening.”
Additionally, there’s a prevailing perception among Lebanese youth that current leaders have an outdated mindset that leaves a prominent gap with new generations. Not to mention that many of the current leaders were involved in the Lebanese civil wars and were part of subsequent crisis that plagued the country. During discussions with youth, one of them expressed:
“Youth and present leaders have significant mindset differences…Political leaders need to be changed; otherwise, the situation in the country will not change”
Lebanese youths’ perceptions towards change in 2024 aligns with George Bernard Shaw’s famous saying decades ago: ‘those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything’– in the current state of Lebanon where some leaders have held power for more than 30 years, the question remains: how will change take place?
Lebanese youth, exhibiting resilience, express hope for a future where adept and successful leaders will drive change, reform, and growth. This hope stems from their belief that Lebanon currently has individuals who are well-suited to lead the country- if they are given the chance. Youths are drawn to personalities with expertise and professionalism, those with proven records for community support, and Lebanese figures who have achieved high ranks, locally and internationally. They believe such leaders could significantly benefit the country with their knowledge and expertise.
Lebanon urgently needs visionary leaders with a dedicated agenda for reform, development, and growth; public welfare must be always prioritized above all other interests. Youth express that successful leaders are those who are honest, intelligent, charismatic, courageous, accountable, independent, and embrace change. These traits combined with expertise and professionalism undoubtedly create ideal leaders for the country. Such leaders that are likely to promote efficient governance by minimizing corruption, favoritism, and nepotism; promoting justice, equality, and merit; and developing governance adept to the digital era and aligned with global happenings.
“A good leader prioritizes the common good over personal gain, listens to diverse perspectives, and make decisions based on evidence and ethical principles. He/ she should have the integrity and courage to speak the truth, ability to mobilize others towards a shared vision, and committed to serving the interests of the people. Lebanon needs leaders who prioritize collaboration over division, empower others to enact positive change, and remain accountable to those they serve.”
